What are these lumps under my armpits?

What are those annoying painful lumps in my underarms? This condition is called Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) , also known as acne inversa; this is a chronic skin condition that causes a localized inflammation, and usually affects  the underarm, groin, and genital area. These can show painful nodules, abscess, and fistulas in areas where apocrine glands are located. Eventually, these lesions will drain pus or blood and leave scarring. You can find many types of Hidradenitis suppurativa, starting from just small lumps or cyst to multiple abscess draining secretion.

Hidradenitis suppurativa causes

The lumps in HS form because of blockages of the hair follicles. The blocked hair follicles trap bacteria, which leads to inflammation and rupture. In most cases, the cause of the blockages is unknown. Genetics, environment, and hormonal factors may play a role. However, contrary to the common beliefs, HS is not contagious and is not caused by bad hygiene.

Who has a higher risk of HS?

If you have a family history of this condition, overweight and a smoker, you have a higher risk of developing Hidradenitis Suppurativa. First signs of HS appear after puberty or in the early ’20s.

What are the symptoms?

The symptom can be mild, moderate, or severe. In mild disease, you will only have some small lumps under the skin. On the other hand, moderate case has lump on multiple areas and have nodules that drain. In worst case scenario, you will have painful lesions in all areas that can even make movement difficult.

What is the treatment of Hidradenitis suppurativa?

There is no cure for Hidradenitis suppurative; however, symptoms are controllable. Treatment can reduce flare-ups, heal wounds, and ease pain. Corticosteroids, analgesics, and antibiotics can be used; they can be topical or in oral therapy. In some cases, nodules and scarring require surgery. An evaluation by a physician is a must to determine the right treatment for you.
