An open comedone is the technical term for a blackhead. There are two types of comedones: open (blackheads) and closed (whiteheads). In other words, a blackhead is a hair follicle that has become so clogged with dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria that it has become a large opening at the skin’s surface. When all of this gunk comes into contact with the open air, it oxidizes and turns black.
