Awareness surrounding breast cancer is incredibly important as early detection, often through screening, can catch the disease when it is most treatable.

What are the symptoms?

There are different symptoms of breast cancer, and some people have no symptoms at all.

Symptoms can include:

  1. Any change in the size or the shape of the breast.
  2. Pain in any area of the breast.

  4. A new lump in the breast or underarm.
  5. If you have any signs that worry you, see your doctor right away.

What are the risk factors?

  • Being a woman.
  • Being older. Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older.
  • Having changes in your BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes.

How to reduce your risk?

Breast cancer prevention starts with healthy habits — such as limiting alcohol and staying physically active.

Research shows that lifestyle changes can decrease the risk of breast cancer, even in women at high risk. To lower your risk:

  • Limit alcohol.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Be physically active.
  • Avoid breast-feed.
  • Limit postmenopausal hormone therapy.

Be vigilant about breast cancer detection. If you notice any changes in your breasts, such as a new lump or skin changes, consult your doctor. Also, ask your doctor when to begin mammograms and other screenings based on your personal history.

Awareness is power, early detection saves lives.

Ladies, check yourself regularly!
