It Is Just A Myth: Shea Butter Is Not A Sunscreen!

Shea butter is not sunscreen; let’s know why. Even though Shea butter offers many benefits, it won’t completely protect you from the sun’s damaging rays.

An estimated SPF range for shea butter is 3 to 4. This does not provide significant UV protection to prevent hyperpigmentation, DNA damage, skin malignancies, photoaging, and wrinkles.

We need regular use of an SPF 30 for effective sun protection.

Of course there are a lot of benefits of Shea butter because of Linoleic, oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids, among other fatty acids, that help to strengthen the skin’s natural barrier. These active compounds are frequently included in the majority of moisturizers, including anti-aging moisturizers to help with fine lines and wrinkles.

What is the origin of the Shea butter myth?

Nobody is certain of the cause but it is noted that it has long been used as a moisturizer in African nations.

It has a low SPF and has been seen on people with darker skin who naturally have an SPF of 5-7. In fact, it can aid in treating serious burns by relaxing and hydrating them. It does not, however, offer sufficient SPF protection.

But we can say that butter helps to relieve the after-effects of sunburn. The healing properties of Shea butter make it the perfect choice for a natural after-sun moisturizer to soothe skin and reduce inflammation caused by the sun’s harmful rays.

Take care of your skin and use sunscreen religiously!
