Is micellar water the same as a toner?

Micellar water is a product enriched with micelles, which allows them to attract water and oil molecules, helping this way to remove dirt and other substances that can damage the skin like pollution, sweat, makeup, or sebum.

Micellar waters are excellent products that can gently help us during our facial cleansing; however, some people are always confusing micellar water with toner.

“Micellar water is not a toner, And should always be removed with water.”

Why is the toner confused with micellar water?

Many brands of micellar water are multi-purpose; they cleanse, moisturize, and tone, etc. So some may think that if they tone, they can be used as a tonic, but they can’t.

Toner has the function of restoring a little balance to your skin after cleansing.

As we saw, when removing lipids and impurities takes away other things necessary for the skin, and together with the water, it takes away other things needed for the skin unbalances the pH.

Micellar waters have the function of cleaning mainly, that is why they have surfactants, and although they are not “soap” as such and most are gentle on the skin, they must be rinsed.

This is because the micelles that trap dirt and other chemicals remain on the skin, causing dryness and even irritation in more sensitive skin.

Why do some say that it is NOT necessary to rinse the micellar water?

Apparently, the water in some areas in Europe is very irritating for the most sensitive skins because when it is treated, they add powerful chemicals.

Therefore, some European bands are creating a very gentle formula, which according to the information they provide, does not need to be rinsed off, especially if plain water irritates you.

However, this is a decision for those who use this specific water.

Always rinse your micellar water, especially if they come mixed with oils; if you choose not to do it, you will notice how your skin will remain sticky and with unwanted texture.
