You must have heard that during pregnancy, women glow differently, and their hair becomes more thick and shiny. Well, doctors give this credit to folic acid. Folic acid isn't for pregnant females only. Let's get to know how it can benefit your skin and hair.

Folic acid is vitamin B9. It is an essential part of our daily diet. It has functions in cellular metabolism and energy production. But its beneficial effects on skin and hair are more evident. If you are not deficient in folic acid, taking folic acid alone won’t affect your heavy hair fall and poor skin. You will need to opt for other dietary ingredients too. But still, one can’t ignore the benefits of folic acid.

Folic acid plays a role in maintaining the skin’s natural barrier. It alleviates dryness by improving moisture-retaining ability. It is an antioxidant by nature, so it prevents premature ageing, reverses sun damage and maintains collagen levels. It is well known for promoting hair growth, making them shiny, and increasing hair volume. It also prevents premature hair greying.

It is available naturally as well as in food supplements. When obtained from a natural source, it is called folate. Naturally, it is obtained from nuts, green leafy vegetables, and citrus fruits. In supplements, it is called folic acid. You can also find it in fortified drinks and cereals. It is safe to take 400mcg daily while those deficient in folic acid will need higher doses.
