Hormonal acne: What is it, and how to treat it?

You don’t have to be a teenager to be dealing with this condition; hormonal issues can follow us through all of our lives, being present every couple of years. Hormonal acne is precisely what you are thinking of; acne caused by hormone imbalance caused by menopause, pregnancy, childbirth, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and other conditions that can increase or uncontrollably decrease your body’s hormones, causing an imbalance.

These fluctuations with hormones tend to stimulate your oil glands, producing more sebum that can clog the pores. Also, this uncontrolled production of sebum can increase the chances of acne and the production of bacteria.

What is the difference between regular acne and hormonal acne?

Regular acne is usually present on the T-zone of the face (forehead, frown area, nose) and chin and depends on numerous factors like skin, products used, and daily routine.

On the other hand, hormone acne can be present in areas like the jawline and bottom of the cheeks and is related to hormonal imbalance.

How to treat hormonal acne?

  1. Wear sunscreen daily: The more exposure you have to sunlight, the more dryness your skin can have; therefore, sebum production will be increased as compensation.
  2. Only use a pea-size amount of product: Especially of your acne products, too much product can irritate your skin.
  3. Keep good hygiene: Wash frequently your pillowcases and towels. Also, keep a separate towel for your face and body.
  4. Don’t over-exfoliate: Overdoing this can make your skin susceptible; therefore, chances of redness, irritation, and infection are increased.
  5. Try ingredients like salicylic acid, lactic acid, retinoids, and niacinamide. They will provide you with a deep cleanse and, at the same time, will repair your skin barrier.
  6. Make adjustments to your lifestyle: Drink enough water, get enough sleep, have a balanced diet, exercise, and control your stress.
  7. Go for a dermatologist consultation at least once a year: Who is better to give you an opinion and suggest effective treatments than a professional? Go for your annual consultation and get the latest treatments for your problem.
