Botox 101: Basics About Neurotoxin Injections

Botox (or Botulinum toxin) comes from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum where types A and B are the only known serotypes used for injectables.

It has been around since the 1970s and was initially used as a treatment for eye muscle hyperactivity.

Due to the ease of administration and few side effects, Allergan (the pioneering company that coined the term “Botox”) discovered that it could be used for cosmetic purposes.

How does it work?

When the neurotoxin is injected into the muscle, the nerve endings that are responsible for muscle contraction are blocked. This blockage prevents the release of acetylcholine, which is responsible for muscle movement.

By doing so, the muscle relaxes and the wrinkles disappear.

What are the limitations of the treatment?

Neurotoxins do not work on all kinds of lines. Only on dynamic or expression lines which are created by muscle movement.

Static lines or deep creases from loss of elasticity and dryness of the skin cannot be addressed completely by neurotoxins but can only be softened.

How long does it last?

The nerves start to regenerate after 3 to 4 months with the wrinkles slowly reappearing after 5 to 6 months.

This is the reason why people usually get a Botox treatment twice a year.
