Some facts about head lice:

  1. Head lice are common in children between the ages of 3 and 11 years old.
  2. These pests are more prevalent in Caucasian children.
  3. They are more frequently found in girls than boys.
  4. Head lice live in all types of hair, whether it’s curly, straight, dyed or natural.

How does head lice spread?

Head lice don’t jump, they don’t live on pets and they have nothing to do with personal hygiene. The most common way head lice spread is by head-to-head contact or in case of sharing a space with an infected person. This may happen during sports, slumber parties or play time in or outside of school.

How to treat head lice?

The treatment requires using an over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medication. Follow these treatment steps:

  • Before using treatment, it may be helpful to remove clothing that can become wet or stained during treatment.
  • Apply lice medicine, also called pediculicide, according to the instructions contained in the box or printed on the label. If the infested person has very long hair (longer than shoulder length), it may be necessary to use a second bottle.
  • Do not use a combination shampoo/ conditioner, or conditioner before using lice medicine. Do not wash the hair for 1–2 days after the lice medicine is removed.
  • Retreatment is meant to kill any surviving hatched lice before they produce new eggs. For some drugs, a second application is recommended about a week after the first treatment. Retreatment with Lindane shampoo is not recommended.
