Role Of Different Skin Layers In Its Health

Skin is the largest organ of our body. While we spend a lot of time on our proper skincare routine and choices to beautify it, understanding its composition and role can help address the issues better. So keep reading to know more about it.

Role Of Different Skin Layers In Its Health

Our skin is not as simple as it looks. It has three main layers. The outer one is called the epidermis. Epidermis is made of several skin cells that are held up with the help of certain proteins such as keratin. This outer layer also contains melanin pigment. Hence, epidermis gives us skin tone, acts as a barrier, and prevents our skin from any harmful entity in the surroundings.

The second layer, dermis, is critical as it makes the most of the thickness of our skin. It bears sebaceous glands that release sebum and hair follicles for our body layer. Importantly it contains collagen and elastin to keep the skin firm and flexible. The third layer is the hypodermis, which comprises fat and connective tissues. This layer is essential in defining our skin’s dimensions as it provides a cushion against bone and underlying muscles. All of these layers play an important role in determining our overall skin appearance.
