Treatments for Atopic Dermatitis in Children

What Is Atopic Dermatitis?

Atopic Dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that makes your skin red and itchy. It is common in kids, but also can occur in adulthood. In this article we will briefly review basic treatment approaches. Keep in mind that all medications described here should be prescribed by a dermatologist.

Treatment

1. Avoid triggers

Symptoms of AD is easier to control if you eliminate possible allergens such as dust, irritants in bathing and moisturizing, alcohols, and lanolin, etc. Since food is the most common allergen exclusive breastfeeding for at least 4 months is highly recommended. And moms should follow diet excluding allergic food while they breastfeed their child.

2. Moisturizers

Good moisturizing of your baby’s skin is the most important aspect of treatment. It is essential to use emollients at least twice a day (more often is better), immediately after bathing. There are many moisturizing products for irritated skin. You should look for products which are fragrance, perfume free and always check the label to see if your baby is allergic to some of these components.

 3. Anti-inflammation drugs.

  • Corticosteroids. Topical steroids are the cornerstone of AD treatment. These drugs can reduce chronic inflammation and help with pruritus. Usually, mild corticosteroids are prescribed and in most cases, it’s enough. Remember to apply this drug only on affected areas.
  • Calcineurin inhibitors (pimecrolimus and tacrolimus). It’s available in different strengths as ointment and cream. These drugs are good to use on gentle thin skin such as face, groin, and axillae.

4. Antipruritics

Also known as anti-itch drugs. These are medications that inhibit the itching. Itching is a difficult symptom to control in patients with atopic dermatitis.  Doctor can prescribe antihistamine with sedative effect which shows good results in patients with severe pruritus.  Anti-inflammation drugs in combination with emollients can effectively decrease itching.
