As we all know, L-ascorbic acid needs to be stored in an air-tight dark container to keep it from oxidizing quickly. Once oxidized, it becomes less effective and may irritate the skin.
THD Ascorbate (the new Vitamin C derivative on the block) is a more stable form of L-ascorbic acid. Theoretically, it is supposed to be the saving grace of Vitamin C. With its better stability, there’s no need to worry about storing it in a beauty fridge to extend its shelf life or rush to empty the bottle within 3 months.
However, some are still doubtful about THD Ascorbate because it still needs to be converted to L-ascorbic acid to stimulate collagen production and do its job. People have also been uncomfortable with the idea that the conversion of THD Ascorbate to L-ascorbic acid has only been observed in vitro. This means, there’s no hard proof that it can convert in human skin.
So, at this point, no one can tell which is better. More research needs to be done before one can conclude.
I guess, if your skin is sensitive, THD might be a better option. But if you want something stronger, I would vote for L-ascorbic acid.
