What is collagen?
A collagen is a necessary form of protein found in the Extra Cellular Matrix (ECM) and connective tissues of the body, where there are 16 types, with I, II, and III being the most abundant types.
This form of protein strengthens the structure of our skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, and muscles.
Unfortunately, due to intrinsic (hormones, genes, cellular metabolism, and metabolic processes) and extrinsic (UV rays, pollution, toxins) factors, our collagen structures become messed up through time and deplete 1% per unit area every year. These collagen structures and synthesis changes contribute to skin dryness, wrinkles, dullness, laxity, and roughness.
What do studies say?
Visible results were noted among women within 35-55 who took 2.5g to 15g of Hydrolysate Collagen once daily. A 4-week intake increased collagen synthesis in the dermis and improved collagen structure. At the same time, an 8-week intake showed visible results in hydration.
What makes this more promising is that even after four weeks of discontinued intake, the collagen density and structure findings remained the same. It also increased the density of other proteins involved in keeping the Extra Cellular Matrix (ECM) strong to improve the skin barrier.
If you are not a fan of capsules, increasing your intake of collagen-rich foods is an option. But do know that supplements are still much more concentrated.
Collagen can be found in beef bone broth, oysters, fish stock, bell pepper, garlic, leafy greens, chicken, citrus fruits, and whole eggs.
