Aromatic plants have been used for therapeutic purposes for many years. They are currently used in the form of essential oils, especially in the cosmetic field, but besides, essential oils have acquired a wide variety of applications, such as their use in the cosmetic sector or to relieve muscle aches stress.
Essential oils contain numerous chemicals, primarily aromatic, with different properties when used as a cosmetic or natural supplement. The oils currently marketed are extracted from flowers, leaves, seeds, or fruits to capture the plants’ aromatic essence from which they come.
The benefits will depend on the species used and help repair, reduce inflammation, and even an antibiotic. Once they are extracted from aromatic plants, they are distilled, so they are mixtures of chemical substances that mostly have a low molecular weight and, combined with their lipophilicity, allow them to cross membranes in a very efficient way.
What are their contraindications?
One of the erroneous beliefs is that since they come from plants and are natural, essential oils are completely safe, but many of these oils should be avoided. Age and a previous history of allergies may influence these adverse reactions.
The main contraindication is not to use in people who have had previous allergies to any of its components; otherwise, a great degree of inflammation can be produced. Also, avoid use on open wounds or hypersensitive skin.
For safe use of these products, their conservation is recommended at room temperature, in dry environments, and without direct sunlight exposure. However, the most common is to find them in the market incorporated in cosmetic products that guarantee their viability during the indicated period of use.
Besides, the safety of essential oils depends on the quality of the raw materials used and the extraction method. For this reason, these products must incorporate the identification of their physical and chemical characteristics and be stored in airtight containers, well filled and protected from light.
