Your skin is composed of layers; each one of them has a specific function to protect the body. Our skins are the larger organ in our body, and one of the main functions is to protect against all external bacteria, pathogens, toxins, and environmental factors that could penetrate it and cause all kinds of problems.
When your skins barrier is damaged, this means that you can be susceptible to all these external factors; hence infection, redness, and irritation, and acne can be caused.
Your most superficial skins layer is called the stratum corneum and is usually compared with a brick wall; inside this layer, you will find keratin and natural moisturizers, and once this one is affected, you can start noticing signs of skin damage.
What can cause skin barrier damage?
The excessive use of aggressive cleansers, choosing multiples and wrong products to exfoliate (mostly scrubs or charcoal products, always apply them gently and make sure you hydrate your skin after), dry and cold air, pollution, genetics, aging, lack of sleep, and even stress can alter the skins barrier.
How do I know if my skin barrier is damaged?
If you start noticing excessive dryness, redness, itchiness, inflammation, flaking, constants skin infections, or if your acne is not improving, your skin barrier may be damaged.
What can I do to renew my skin barrier?
Choose your products wisely; if you notice redness or irritation after using certain products, you must avoid them and try using just a few products simultaneously; this way, it will be easier to know which one is not suitable for your skins type.
Also, always use warm water to wash your face (avoid hot or too cold temperatures), add a gentle cleanser, do not exfoliate.
At the same time, your skin is affected, add SPF to your routine and use specific ingredients such as ceramides, linoleic acid, niacinamide, shea butter, and squalene.
