If we could be more deliberate with our diet and eat for nourishment rather than entertainment, we could preserve cellular health and reverse aging. One of the suggested diet plans for health optimization and age reversal is the whole-food plant-based diet.
What is a whole-food plant-based diet (WFPB)?
It is a diet that mainly consists of unprocessed and unrefined sources of food in the form of vegetables, fruits, lentils, beans, nuts, and whole grains while cutting down on animal-based sources and dairy.
A Whole Food Plant-Based diet can reduce cellular damage caused by intrinsic and extrinsic factors by feeding the body with necessary anti-oxidants. These anti-oxidants fight possible inflammation and reduce oxidative stress. The most common anti-oxidants found in WFPB are vitamins A, C, and E, responsible for scavenging free radicals.
Studies claim that by eliminating animal-based and processed food from our diet, we can preserve our telomere length, reverse cell aging, and reduce AGEs (Advanced Glycation End-products) responsible for the stiffening of proteins in our skin.
One study demonstrated that telomere length could be increased after five years of following a WFPB diet. A diet rich in total and saturated fat, refined flour and sugars, and meat can shorten telomere length.
