When it comes to Skincare, people think the more products they use, the better. But sometimes less is more. Some products can’t be combined. Because mixing certain ingredients can cause unwanted skin reactions or inefficiency.
These are the most common products that we use in our face. Most of them have different functions but that doesn’t mean you can apply them at the same time. So this is why we will explain how they work and how to apply them.
What are inside Skincare products?
For exfoliation purposes, we have the Alpha-Hydroxy-Acid(AHA) used in serums and creams. The most known types are glycolic and lactic acid which work superficially to remove dead skin cells. On the other hand, we have the Beta-Hydroxy-Acid (BHA) which is amazing for oily skin. BHA is recommended for deeper exfoliation. The most known BHA is salicylic acid.
Pigmentation can be addressed with antioxidants, like Vitamin C that fights free radicals and removes dead spots. Also, Retinoids, besides the reduction of pigmentation, stimulates collagen production, reduce fine lines, and accelerates cellular renovation.
And lastly, we have Benzoyl Peroxide, which is one of the favorites to treat Acne because of its antiseptic properties.
Do not combine these Skincare ingredients
Retinoids + AHA/BHA: This will cause double exfoliation, so together can cause Irritation, redness, and dryness.
Solution: Alternate days of application.
Retinoids + Vitamin C: Vitamin C works better on an acidic environment and retinoids on an alkaline, so is better to use them on separate occasions, together can cause Irritation, inflammation, redness, and dryness.
Solution: Apply Vitamin C during the day and retinoids in the nighttime. Remember that sunlight breaks down retinol.
Retinoid + Benzoyl Peroxide: Benzoyl peroxide can deactivate the retinol and can cause dryness and severe irritation.
Solution: Apply the benzoyl peroxide during the day and retinoids in the nighttime.
Vitamin C + AHA/BHA: When combined they will not have the maximum effect, also can cause irritation.
Solution: Apply Vitamin C during the day and retinoids in the nighttime.
Benzoyl Peroxide + BHA: they both work to remove dead skin, and this double exfoliation can cause irritation, inflammation, redness, and dryness.
Solution: Alternate days of application
