We must adapt our skincare according to each season in order to maintain proper skin hydration and avoid redness and sensitivity.
One of the seasons in where we must be extra careful is winter, where our skin tends to get dryer and we forget to use sunscreen because we think sunlight is not affecting us, but is the opposite, during this time of the year UV light affects our skin the most.
We tend to commint many skincare mistakes during winter and here we will go through some of them:
- Use alcohol-based toners: As part of your skin’s care during the winter is the search for the right tonics such as thermal water, cucumber, and rose facial sprays. This tonify without dehydrating and irritating the skin.
- Stop using antioxidants: Although antioxidants enhance UV protection, it is not necessary to stop using them in the winter. They are not ingredients from which we should take a break at any time of the year. On the contrary, we should use them to recover from sun damage during summer. Use Vitamin A and C to fight free radicals that cause skin aging, and vitamin E, apart from its antioxidant properties, is perfect for boosting hydration.
- Stop using sunscreen: Ultraviolet rays never take a break and can affect your skin in any season of the year, even if it is cloudy. Remember that UV light can penetrate the clouds and even bounce on the snow. Devices we use every day, such as TV screens, computers, and cell phones, also emit light, which can worsen our skin’s appearance. That’s why sunscreen should be a must in every skincare routine every day of the year.
- Over-cleansing our face: Cleansers during winter should not weaken our skin barrier. Mistakes such as using boiling water when washing, frequently exfoliating, and using alcohol-based cleansers for deep cleansing can damage it and make it more prone to eczema, contact dermatitis, and both bacterial and viral infections. Preferably use moisturizing cream cleansers, syndets, or oil cleansers to keep the lipids that make up our skin intact.
- Forgetting about your lips: Our lips also deserve protection during winter. Just like the face, dryness, irritation, and flaking can increase during these months, as well as the over-infection of cracks that dryness can cause. That is why it is essential to protect your lips with lip balms or cocoa butter.
