What is a sun stroke?

Sun stroke, also known as heat stroke, is a type of hyperthermia (over heating) – a disease related to heat. Heat stroke is defined as uncommon high body temperature accompanied by physical symptoms such as alterations in functioning of the nervous system.

Causes:

It happens when you’re exposed to extremely hot weather for an extended amount of time in summers. It is especially common in older folks and those who have a chronic condition.

A type of heat stroke that is caused by the increase of body temperature due to any physical activity in heat is called exertional heat stroke. It can happen to anyone who exercises or works in hot weather, but it’s more likely to happen to people who aren’t adapted to high temperatures.

Symptoms:

Heat stroke symptoms can be similar to those of a heart attack or heat exhaustion in some cases.

Nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, headache, muscle cramps, high body temperature, hot dry skin, difficulty in breathing, dizziness, seizure etc. are some symptoms of sun stroke in hot temperatures of summers.

Treatment:

Wear clothes that are loose and comfortable; which don’t fit tightly and keep your body cool.

Sunburn impairs your body’s capacity to cool itself, so wear a big wide hat and sunglasses whenever you go out in direct sunlight. Also, use a really good sunblock or sunscreen and apply it frequently if you sweat a lot.

Staying hydrated in summers will aid in the production of perspiration and the maintenance of a healthy body temperature.

Exercise or physical labor should be done during cooler times of the day in hot summers.
