Although the image of a natural pregnancy glow is appealing, the fact is that pregnancy may also wreak havoc on your skin.
So what are the products that you should avoid and those that you should include in your skincare routine?
Let’s find out!
What skin changes occur during pregnancy?
Many women notice changes during pregnancy. Some of the most common changes include acne, dark spots, stretch marks, changes in hair growth, etc.
Some are due to changes in hormone levels that happen during pregnancy. But for most skin changes experts are not sure of the exact cause.
The first step – talk to your dermatologist:

Because there are so many skincare ingredients that are not considered safe in pregnancy or have not been tested for safety in pregnancy, it is recommended to follow the less-is-more approach.
If there is a condition that you’re trying to manage—like acne, it’s best to get medical advice first before using OTDs.
Ingredients that you should avoid:

Botox and fillers are not pregnancy safe.
Common ingredients deemed to be unsafe while pregnant include any beta or alpha hydroxy acids (like salicylic acid), Retin-As, and retinol; additionally, many serums like vitamin C have not been tested for pregnancy safety.
Avoid antibiotics in the family with tetracycline. Brightening agent hydroquinone has been shown to get absorbed systemically, so the risk outweighs the benefit when you’re pregnant.
Minoxidil, a hair growth stimulant should also be avoided due to documented fetal risk.
What to use instead:
Products that have the all-clear include basics like Vaseline and Aquaphor and moisturizers with limited ingredients. And instead of chemical sunscreens, use mineral sunscreens.
Incorporating azelaic acid is a must! It keeps hyperpigmentation at bay, and also it minimizes hormonal breakouts.
Finally, if parting ways with your beloved retinol is too daunting, opt for bakuchiol instead. It’s a nice and safe option to help you throughout this time.
