People with oily skin often complain about how “shiny” they look, or how hard it is to handle & maintain their skin. And we definitely get it – because let’s be honest, having oily skin seems like it is a pain in the ass. But nothing is ever exactly what it seems… Did you know that there are actually lots of benefits for people with oily skin?
5 reasons to love your oily skin:
- Smoother & thicker skin
First of all, oily skin is thicker & smoother than dry or normal skin. The overactive sebaceous glands found in oilier skin types are the reason behind this; they are overcompensating in their production of oil. That’s why wrinkles are shorter & shallower in those areas of your face where your sebaceous glands are overproducing oil: the abundance of oil is actually what makes your skin stronger and more elastic.
- Youthful appearance
Where you might think of your skin as appearing too oily or even “dirty”, your skin looks dewy & youthful to most people. With the right skin care regime, your skin will have a vibrant glow. Most people are trying to “get rid” of their oily skin by using harsh products that dry out the skin cells of all oil – but doing so will actually cause the sebum in your skin to produce even more oil.
- Protection from the sun
The oil that is produced by your own skin contains vitamin E. This is a natural sunscreen which contains a lot of antioxidants. This doesn’t mean that you won’t have to protect your skin with sunscreen anymore, but it does mean that having oilier skin gives you an extra layer of protection against harmful UV rays. Another fun fact with regards to the sun: the more oily your skin is, the faster you’ll tan¹. The amount of sebum produced has a huge impact on the tanning process, and it will help preserve the tan longer, as well.
- A shorter beauty routine
Another huge benefit: your skin is softer and requires a lesser amount of skin care products. Because your skin is already “overcompensating” – so just a light moisturizer should do the trick. This will save you money and it takes less time to do your beauty routine. It’s also easier to put on makeup with oilier skin, as the oils produced by the skin provide a great base for makeup; it will blend better, and in the end, last longer.
- Balanced skin
Last but not least, oily skin types generally have an easier time balancing out their pH balance than those with normal skin types. The oil that is naturally produced by your own skin contains oleic acid, which protects your skin from bacteria & infections. Having oilier skin offers better protection, because it has a thicker layer of oleic acid compared to normal or dry skin types. Read more
