If your eyelashes are growing in the inward direction, facing the eyes, then they are not abnormal. However, it is a condition called trichiasis. It happens when eyelashes are slightly coarse, they poke in your eyes which can cause irritation, pain, and watery eyes. Although this condition is not unique, it is problematic as it can damage your eyes.

There can be several causes for this condition. It can develop because of any infection, inflammation, or formation of an extra row of eyelashes. However, sometimes it occurs without any cause. If you observe a similar condition, make sure to approach your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

If trichiasis is left untreated, it can cause severe damage to your cornea which can lead to infections and inflammation. There are a few treatment options like:

  • Epilation of disoriented eyelashes
  • Removal of these eyelashes by electrolysis
  • Surgery of eyelids. This is done in severe conditions only.
  • Corneal protection lens to prevent damage. However, it is paired with epilation, as removal of poking eyelashes is necessary.

In both options involving plucking of eyelashes, they tend to grow back.
