How To Protect Ourselves From Free Radicals?

We see Free Radicals everywhere, especially when talking about skincare. But the question is, how much do you know about them? Free radicals are unstable atoms that can damage cells, causing illness and aging due to certain factors like contamination, tobacco, sunlight, bacteria, fungus, sugar, and a specific type of food like fat. They only live just a few microseconds, but they can reach everything around them and cause damage. Our own bodies can fight against bacteria and viruses, but when produced in large quantities, these can cause damage already.

They can damage our cells, specifically the DNA, mitochondria, enzyme, and protein receptors; all of these can cause pathological conditions in the long run. Also, collagen and elastin can be lost due to free radicals causing fine lines and wrinkles. Also causes premature ageing at a young age.

How can you protect yourself from Free Radicals?

  • Diet: maintain a healthy diet rich in antioxidants like vitamin A, C, and E, Q10 coenzyme, glutathione, and flavonoids. You will find them in oranges, salmon, tomato, fish, grapes, carrots, dried fruits, raisins, watermelon, blueberries, pumpkin, and apple.
  • Always wear SPF: minimum 30; you can also use moisturizer or makeup with SPF but remember to do your touch-up regularly.
  • Antioxidant supplements: If your diet lacks some of the food mentioned before, you can try supplements, but don’t abuse them.

What are the best antioxidant ingredients we can add to our skincare to avoid premature aging?

Vitamins:

  • A (retinol): penetrates deeper and stimulates collagen production and cell repair.
  • B3 (niacinamide): has anti-inflammatory properties and reduces pigmentation.
  • C: is the most known antioxidant in the market, improves pigmentation, and boosts collagen production.
  • E: usually found in moisturizers, can increase wound healing, and treat dry skin.
  • Resveratrol: found mostly in grapes and berries. Studies have shown improvements in mitochondria activity hence prolongs cell life.
  • Coenzyme Q10: stimulates collagen production improving texture and elasticity.
