Gone are the days of overplucked, thin lines penciled in with colored makeup. Instead, grow enviable brows that frame your eyes and add character to your face. Even if your brows are currently thin and sparse, dense eyebrows with arched perfection—think model Cara Delevingne or actress Angelina Jolie—can be yours with the right regimen to help your eyebrows thicken.
Anatomy of an Eyebrow
Eyebrow hair grows just like other hair on the body. Hair has four cycles of development: anagen, which is the time of growth; catagen, a time of transition during which the hair follicle shrinks; telogen, a resting phase in which hair doesn’t grow or shed; and exogen, the time during which old hair is shed and new hair grows in. Eyebrows have a shorter anagen, or growth, phase, than the hair on your head. Instead of years, they grow in a cycle that lasts three to four months. To build thicker brows, cultivate the hairs during the anagen phase.
Pluck No More
If you’ve been plucking since your teen years, your eyebrows may appear sparse and thin. Compulsive tweezing interrupts eyebrow hair in the middle of its anagen and telogen phases. Skipping the tweezers for a few months, and up to a year, encourages the brows to grow back more robustly. They may appear unruly for a while, but wait it out and trim or wax only once they’ve reached the desired thickness. A brow gel that holds the hairs you do have in place and dotting a concealer over stray hairs helps you look polished, but doesn’t interrupt the hair’s growth.
Exfoliation and Serums
Use a soft toothbrush to exfoliate the brow area gently. This stimulates the hair follicles and could prompt better growth. Follow exfoliation with a serum that may encourage brow growth. These usually contain ingredients, particularly peptides and herbal extracts, that could stimulate growth at the follicle level during the anagen cycle. Read more
