Glycolic Acid: What It Is, How It Works, How To Use It

Aside from retinol, glycolic acid is another ingredient that deserves a higher seat than all other skincare agents.

What is it? Glycolic acid

Glycolic acid is the smallest alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) available on the market that is derived from sugar cane. Due to its small size, it can penetrate the skin quickly and easily.

How does it work?

The topmost layer of our skin is glued together along with our dead skin cells

GA works by breaking down the glue in between the dead skin cells so that they could shed off and allow new ones to resurface.

As an effect of this action, the debris in our pores is purged out. This is why it can help prevent acne formation, improve skin texture, and reduce pore size.

On top of this, GA boosts collagen production resulting in a decrease in fine lines/ wrinkles and more elastic skin.

How do you start?

If it is your first time, start with a low dose (perhaps, 5%) and apply once to twice weekly during the first 2 weeks. Increase the frequency every 2 weeks until you are able to use it once daily.

If you are using retinoids, other hydroxy acids, and Benzoyl Peroxide, ask your dermatologist if you could incorporate glycolic into your regimen. He/ she will be able to tell whether your skin can handle the extra exfoliation. And if so, he/she will be able to provide the correct strategy.
