Gluconolactone: a chemical exfoliator for sensitive skin

Gluconolactone is a poly-hydroxy-acid that comes from the same family as  and beta-hydroxy acids. As the name implies, it has “poly” or multiple hydroxyl groups, which differentiates it from your alpha and beta-hydroxy acids.

The advantage of a gluconolactone is that it also possesses the same properties of alpha and beta-hydroxy acids (e.g. improves skin texture and tone, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, reduces visible signs of aging, removes dead skin cells, and unclogs pores) with additional benefits.

Since its molecular size is larger compared to its sister acids, its delivery into the skin is slower. Hence, its milder effects and friendliness to sensitive skin types.

Given that it has more hydroxyl groups, it can act as a humectant by attracting water from the deeper layers of the skin and the surrounding environment. This is why aside from it being an exfoliator, it can also moisturize, strengthen the skin barrier, and relieve any redness or itchiness present in the skin.

Because of these promising additional properties, gluconolactone was tested side-by-side with benzoyl peroxide, to see if gluconolactone alone can be a substitute for those with acne and sensitive skin.
