Avoid these when washing your hair

How often you can wash your hair depends on a lot of conditions like the type of hair, weather, oiliness, sweat, and type of products used; some people need to do it daily while others can do it just once a week. Using the wrong technique and products when washing your hair is one of the main reasons people complain about conditions like dry scalp and dandruff.

The right way to use a shampoo is taking a small amount of product and applying it close to the scalp. Distribute the product around that area and then rinse. If you’re only applying the shampoo on the tips, you are not removing the oil and bacteria. Worst, you might cause split ends. Opposite to this, conditioner should be applied only to the ends, leave it for a few minutes and then rinse with water.

You can wash your hair but AVOID doing these

  • Wash your hair only with conditioner: this is known as “co-washing”. Shampoo is the only product able to remove dirt. Using just conditioner can lead to conditions like dermatitis and allergy.
  • Hot water will dehydrate the hair and scalp and this strips the oil produced so avoid hot water at all cost
  • Vinegar and baking soda modify the scalp’s pH which causes irritation and in some cases, infections
  • Adding birth control pills or garlic will not cause any visible improvement to the hair
  • Just using water to wash the hair is a big no
  • Washing it more than once a day. Excess washing with shampoo will remove all the oil produced causing dry scalp, flaking, itchiness, and even dandruff
  • Products with sulfate and parabens: prolong use of these can irritate the scalp. Check on the back of the product to make sure your product is sulfate-free or paraben-free

Instead, you can TRY these things

  • Choose a shampoo indicated for your hair type
  • Wash your hair with cold or warm water (not HOT water)
  • Add argan oil for special occasions
  • Try a hydrating mask once a week
