How do portable devices work on the skin?
Basically, the main action of skin tightening devices is to stimulate collagen production.
The increase in collagen in the skin will induce skin elasticity, tightness, and plumpness.
The difference among these devices is the medium used to stimulate collagen. There is radiofrequency, infrared light, and intense pulsed light (IPL).
How does each work?
Radiofrequency uses heat to cause skin injury under controlled limits to induce the natural healing process. This healing process stimulates collagen synthesis.
On the other hand, infrared uses light energy to contract and stimulate collagen fibers without causing injury to the skin by bypassing the topmost layer of the skin.
IPL, like infrared, also uses light energy but with different wavelengths making it less focused on a certain area and for a more spread out.
What is the difference between portable and in-office devices?
Portable devices are much gentler than in-office devices. Since at-home devices are for general consumption with no training background, the power settings are kept intentionally limited.
So, do they work?
They might be able to help for maintenance but not really for initial treatment. They need to be used more frequently and consistently to see results.
However, for darker skin types, more caution should be observed as skin burn is more likely to happen.
