No ingredient deserves its own holiday more than vitamin C. While many of us are familiar with its health benefits, the antioxidant has also become a staple in skin care regimens across the globe. From cleansers to serums to moisturizers and face masks, the skin staple has left its mark on a variety of formulas thanks to its “widespread properties and ability to regenerate the skin,” says Dr. Lily Talakoub, a board-certified dermatologist at McClean Dermatology.
Health and Skin Care Benefits of Vitamin C
When we think about health, it’s hard not to think about vitamin C. According to Dr. Zenhausern, it’s considered “one of the most powerful antioxidants” for not only its contribution to our beauty but our wellness, too. “[Vitamin C] boosts your immunity [to] prevent or treat a cold, aids in collagen formation, helps wounds heal quicker [and] also may help reduce the risk of heart disease,” says Dr. Jaliman.
Along with boasting some major health benefits, vitamin C is also good for your skin. In skin care, vitamin C is probably best known for its anti-aging benefits, as its antioxidant makeup basically exists to do away with pesky signs of aging. However, it’s much more nitty gritty than that. “Vitamin C stimulates collagen production,” explains Dr. Debra Jaliman, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, adding that collagen “improves the skin’s texture and quality.” Additionally, the skin superstar inhibits an enzyme called tyrosinase, which is responsible for “converting tyrosine into melanin, thus preventing hyperpigmentation,” Jaliman adds.
