Determining which compounds we want to avoid in our skincare can be difficult in times when clean products are booming and marketers advertise what isn’t in their products.
Consider fragrance as an example.
A skincare regimen free of fragrance is a no-brainer for individuals who are scent-sensitive. This is frequently manifested as sensitive, troublesome, or readily inflamed skin, as well as headaches and migraines.

What is fragrance?
Natural and synthetic fragrances fall into two broad types. The synthetic one simply put, is developed in a lab. One of the top reasons a brand may choose to use it is that it will last a lot longer than a natural fragrance which may only last one to two years, while synthetic fragrance can last up to five years.
Natural fragrances are those that originate from a natural source and are not made up in a lab; they are in fact extracted from their natural source.
Why do skincare products contain fragrance?
If there was a product that works incredibly well for your skin, but gives bad smell, you would probably end up never using it. That is the reason why companies use fragrance to cover up the smell of other ingredients, or to try and make the product smell better and be marketed accordingly.
But why does fragrance irritate skin?
It is supposed that fragrance leads to collagen breakdown by irritating the skin and impairing its ability to renew and plump itself, much the way environmental stressors such as the sun do.
However, it is unclear if this is true. There isn’t enough research to prove this!

According to the Dermatology Times, fragrances are most likely to cause allergic contact dermatitis. They account for 30-45% of reactions in cosmetic products.
Be smart and read the labels in your products for a healthier skin!
