How to apply sunscreen correctly?

Your best ally in preventing wrinkles and skin damage is sunscreen, so it is necessary to apply it correctly.

This product must be part of your daily skin routine, even if you are not planning to leave your house; hence, it is necessary to be clear about how and where to wear it.

Here we will go through some recommendations you must follow to apply your sunscreen correctly:

  1. Please put it on before leaving home: It is essential to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before exposure, as this is the time it takes for the chemical filters to act (between 20 and 30 minutes). So it is best to apply it at home, before going to the pool or the beach.
  2. Apply a generous amount: To obtain the level of protection indicated on the package, you should apply 30 ml of product all over the body with each application. Therefore, a 200 ml bottle should be sufficient for 8-10 applications. If you consider each area separately (face, arm, etc.), apply the equivalent of two strips of sunscreen applied on your fingers, going from the palmar crease to the fingertips, this is known as the “two-finger rule,” and if you use a spray, between 8-10 sprays.
  3. Do not forget any area of the body: Such as eyelids, behind the ears, inner arms or thighs, back of the hands, feet, and behind the knees.
  4. Spread evenly: Physical filters (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) leave a whitish finish that allows you to see where the cream has been applied. On the other hand, if it contains chemical filters (invisible), pay more attention because you can leave areas without cream.
  5. Reapplying is very important: the sunscreen alone only guarantees about three hours of protection, so you should apply it two to three times daily. Don’t forget to do it even if you are using a waterproof product.
  6. Follow this order to get the desired results: Cleanser, toner, serum for a specific problem or moisturizer, sunscreen, and makeup.
