I’m pregnant. Do I need to change my beauty products?

Is it safe to use the same beauty products if you are pregnant? No, some products are not meant to use during this period. But don’t worry, all of them can be replaced for approved ingredients, or you can go completely natural. The FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) classifies the ingredients following the alphabet letters. Letters A and B are the ones considered safe and can be be used during pregnancy. Not all products need to be FDA approved to be on the market, but this is an easy way to recognize them.

Here you have a list of ingredients in beauty products that you need to avoid if you are pregnant

Salicylic Acid

is safe to use, as long as you are choosing a low concentration.

Hydroquinone

deeply penetrates the skin and has higher absorption than the rest of the products. This is why it is better to limit the use of this. This is not related to birth defects, but the fact that it can be absorbed in large quantities is a red flag.

Retinoids

the use of these in low doses is completely safe, on the other hand, higher concentrations can lead to birth defects.

Essential oils

most of them have natural products, but these don’t go under the FDA assessment.

Aluminum Chloride

is part of deodorant and antiperspirant, avoid using in high concentrations.

Formaldehyde

the connection between cancer and this ingredient is well-known. We can find it as part of hair products and nail polishes. They are linked with miscarriage and infertility. But not all nail polishes have this ingredient, just read the label and look for the ingredients.

Chemical sunscreens

are linked to the underdevelopment of the nervous system of the baby. Can cause hormonal imbalance, especially the Oxybenzone. You can use natural or physical sunscreen instead.

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA)

this ingredient is found in fake tanners. It only stays on the external layer of the skin but can cause allergy. This is the main reason why it is not recommended during this period.

Botulinum toxin and dermal fillers

there are no studies done on pregnant women about these treatments, so it is better to avoid them.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

is used as a foaming agent in soaps and shampoo, this ingredient has higher chances to irritate. New beauty products are slowly changing this ingredient for more natural options.
