Some of us tend to be confused when trying to find out if our beauty products are already expired. Because not all of them have a clear expiration date on the box. It is not mandatory for all the products to show a specific expiration date, but you can find there some symbols or serial numbers. Only sunscreen and acne are required to show it, mainly because of the ingredients.
Most of the time, you only find a jar symbol with a number on it (PAO logo). If it shows “12M”, this means this product will last up to 12 months after you first opened it. Write on the box the date of opening, this will help you to remember. After this time, most products will lose effectiveness and cause you skin reactions. And some of them can even become stronger (be careful with the acids), and give you undesired reactions.

Some products have a shelf life between 1-3 years, this depends mainly on the ingredients and preservatives used. Creams and liquid have a shorter life compared to powders. Be careful especially with mascaras, they tend to expire faster than the rest of the products.
Here are some signs that your beauty products might be expired
- Change in color and smell of the product.
- Consistency can be drier or harder.
- The product starts drying out or separating
- The product cannot be mixed or absorbed by the skin.
- Have an uncomfortable sensation after you apply them to your skin.
And some tips so you can prolong the functional life
- Use the spatulas that comes with the products. This way you avoid using your fingers and have a lower risk of contamination.
- Clean constantly your brushes and applicators before and after every use.
- Do not expose the products to extreme temperatures. Do not expose them to direct sunlight or cold temperatures on the fridge. Not all the products will react the same if you keep them on the fridge, read the recommendations first.
