6 Hair-Color Trends to Look Out for in 2020, According to Stylists

When it comes to hairstyle trends, nothing is ever really out. That being said, there are looks that naturally come and go — especially when it comes to hair color. A new decade (!) brings new trends and fresh ways to color and highlight hair. We asked top colorists to find out what their clients are requesting and what hues they think will continue to be huge in 2020. They aren’t psychic (at least we don’t think so), but they’re listening to their clients’ needs all day at the salon — and some of those clients happen to be major trendsetters such as celebrities.

Lucky for us, these hues are decidedly wearable. Well, most of them. Some are easier than others to achieve (we’re looking at you, smoky ice), but each can look incredible on just about everyone. Your new hair-color vibe for 2020 is right ahead. You’ll probably want to bookmark this.

Strawberry Blonde

Shades of red are still trending for 2020, but if you’re looking to go to the lighter side, strawberry blonde is a great option. “I have a lot of clients that are wanting [a] really bleached-out pale blonde, as well as strawberry and apricot blonde,” says colorist Jacob Schwartz at Meche Salon in Beverly Hills. Isla Fisher favors this pretty strawberry hue, a stunning combination of blonde and red. It’s a low-maintenance shade that allows a lot of flexibility in how intense you want it to be.

Black and Almost-Black

Actress and singer Herizen Guardiola’s rounded curls are a big 2020 haircut trend. Also about to take off in 2020? Her one-shade, highlight-free hair in a dark nearly-black hue that makes her curls look even fuller. Her color showcases the natural dimension of her curls when they hit the light. Colorist Rachel Bodt says that if you decide to go for a deep hue like this, talk to your stylist about what would look best against your complexion. “For certain skin tones, you don’t need to go super black for the hair to read deep and rich,” she says. She suggests starting off with a rich demi-permanent color before deciding to go deeper. “Remember: it’s always easy to go darker [gradually] than going too dark and praying it lightens up.”
