4 Exfoliation Dos and Don’ts for Even Skin
In the skin care world, exfoliating your skin is right up there with drinking water and applying sunscreen. Consistent exfoliation can lead to brighter, more even and therefore healthier-looking skin. It works by sloughing away dead skin and other buildup on the surface (good riddance), revealing the radiant skin that’s underneath. Keep up a consistent exfoliation routine and you’ll definitely notice a difference.
1. Don’t Over-Exfoliate
This is perhaps the most important bit of advice. Exfoliating your skin too frequently—or using especially rough ingredients—can result in damaged skin that’s dry, red and even painful to the touch. While there are two camps when it comes to how often—daily or weekly—it’s safe to stick to once or twice a week and avoid applying too much pressure when scrubbing the skin. If you notice a burning sensation or if your skin becomes really sensitive after using a product, toss it. Ultimately, you should listen carefully to what your skin tells you.
2. Do Exfoliate All Over
Exfoliation doesn’t stop at your facial skin. Also try exfoliating your entire body—these products typically have larger grains since non-facial skin isn’t as sensitive—and even your lips. Your feet can also use regular exfoliation, especially on the heels and the sides, where dry skin builds up. Other areas to exfoliate: your elbows and knees and even your scalp. Yep, there are exfoliating products for your scalp.
3. Don’t Go Sunbathing After Exfoliating
Because exfoliating reveals a baby-fresh layer of skin, you could be more susceptible to the sun’s rays. Sunburns aren’t a good look for anyone. Use extra caution when heading outdoors. Use a higher-SPF sunscreen, wear a hat, carry a sun umbrella and try to stick to shady spots whenever you can. Your skin will thank you. Read more
