What can cause psoriasis, and how to treat the lesions?

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that mostly affects only the skin but, on occasions, can also affect joints. It is known for causing red and white “plaque” lesions mainly in the knee, elbows, forearms, and even nails, accompanied by pain or itchiness.

What can cause Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is caused by increased production of superficial skin cells, but the main reason is still unknown; however, a genetic factor can predispose to Psoriasis, alterations in the immune system, and known triggers like stress and obesity will activate the lesions.

What is the most common age for Psoriasis?

Psoriasis lesions are commonly showing in ages between 15 and 35 years, but can also be present outside those ages.

Can Psoriasis be treated?

This condition doesn’t have a cure, but it can be treated and reduce all the patient’s symptoms. The physician will recommend a treatment based on the symptoms like itchiness and aspect of lesions, and most of the time is limited to topical treatments like corticosteroids to treat itchiness. Also, systemic medications, UV therapy, and Phototherapy can be used to treat these lesions, showing great improvement.

It is also important that you learn how to recognize your triggers and avoid them. Most of them include alcohol, stress, depression, and tobacco.
