The Truth About Blackheads

Most people believe that Blackheads are clogged pores by dirt, and this is what gives them that dark appearance. But skin sebum contains a pigment called melanin. As sebum is obstructing the pore in the skin surface, melanin oxidates when in contact with air and turns black hence the dark color and name.

How to treat Blackheads?

  • Choose oil-free products
  • Use cream and gels containing retinoids; they will work, but for you to see some results, you need to wait around ten weeks, so be patient
  • Exfoliate the skin once or twice per week
  • Have a facial done by a professional at least once every month specially adapted for your type of skin and conditions (dryness, oiliness, acne)
  • Always do a double cleanse, even if you don’t wear makeup

What products are recommended?

  • Salicylic acid: Is a Beta-hydroxic-acid hence penetrates deeper than AHA. Works by removing the superficial layer of dead skin, has anti-inflammatory properties. It also unclog pores. Do not combine with benzoyl peroxide, vitamin C, or retinoids.
  • Glycolic acid: Is an AHA. Exfoliates our skin, removing the most superficial layer. Increase hyaluronic acid production and increase collagen. If it is combined with retinoids or vitamin C can cause irritation
  • Niacinamide: is a form of vitamin B and can be combined with most products you use on your daily routine. Stimulates the dermis, minimize pore appearance, has antibacterial properties, and reduces inflammation. It will take around six weeks to show improvement.
  • Vitamin C: it is one of the most powerful antioxidants; helps with pigmentation and protects from UV light. Careful when mixing with other products like retinoids or AHA because they don’t work well together.
  • Clay mask: ideal for oily skin and acne condition, has mattifying properties, reduces pores appearance, and removes dirt and excess oil.
