Have you heard about slugging?
Isn’t that some kind of a mollusk?
Nope! There are no slugs involved.
It‘s a popular skincare trend in K-beauty and TikTok where people slather a petroleum-based occlusive (that feels like a slug), such as Vaseline petroleum jelly, all over the face
The logic behind is that by buttering your skin with an occlusive agent, you can lock in hydration or moisture and protect the skin barrier which is good for extremely dry and sensitive skin types.
How is slugging done?
- Before bedtime, cleanse your skin with your preferred facial wash. Make sure you’re able to remove all make-up or other residues to avoid breakouts.
- If your skin is dehydrated, you can add a thin layer of a hydrating toner, serum, or cream.
- Let your pre-slug skincare settle for a minute or two until it gets absorbed.
- Once ready, slug away with a petrolatum-based occlusive!
Do not get overly excited though. A pinch or less is enough to cover the whole face. If you want to include strong agents in your pre-slug skincare, you may do so. But remember to limit the amount that you apply.
Unfortunately, this isn’t for everybody. If you have acne-prone and oily skin, it can clog your pores and trigger your acne.
