Skin Care Routine To Treat Post Pregnancy Hyperpigmentation

Have you ever developed post-pregnancy hyperpigmentation on your face? If yes, then you perfectly know how it makes you feel low. Let’s discuss in detail why it happens.

People have different levels of melanin in their skin, which accounts for their skin’s overall color. Melanin is a type of pigment in the skin which the skin cells produce to protect the skin from UV light damage. However, the skin may create too much melanin in a specific area, causing the skin to darken. This is hyperpigmentation. Skin hyperpigmentation or as generally referred to as melasma is common in pregnancy and often is well described and completely benign in nature.  This hyperpigmentation is a nightmare in their beautiful pregnancy journey.

When does hyperpigmentation usually appear?

All changes in skin pigmentation usually disappear on its own after delivery. The darkened spots probably will fade within a year, and your skin should return to its normal shade, although sometimes the changes never completely disappear. Skin pigmentation can be unsightly for some individuals with it, or psychologically troubling for others who it affects.

Tips to remain beautiful:

Using broad spectrum sunblock, avoiding excessive sun exposure, avoiding waxing in the areas of hyperpigmentation, using hypoallergenic skin care products and applying concealer are some of the ways to tackle this problem. However, if you still have this skin issue a few months and it’s bothering you, you can have some other available treatment such as using a bleaching cream that contains hydroquinone (and possibly sunscreen), a topical medication that contains retinol or a chemical peel such as azelaic acid.

Don’t expect instant results as it may take many months to see improvement. If other treatments haven’t helped, a dermatologist can help lighten dark spots with laser treatments, but that’s not the first option. In any case, continue to protect your skin from the sun by using sunscreen every day, wearing protective clothing, and staying out of the sun during peak hours.
