Dandruff: How Can You Get Rid of It?

What is dandruff?

Dandruff is a form of a scalp condition where dry flaky skin sheds off forming white specks on your hair and shoulders. It is itchy and bothersome, which prompts affected individuals to search for treatment.

What causes dandruff?

Dandruff is pretty common and researchers are still finding a direct cause. But so far, it is associated with dry skin and the presence of a yeast-like fungus.

It is also seen in cases of Psoriasis, Seborrheic Dermatitis, and Eczema.

How can you treat it?

Most cases can be treated at home with dandruff shampoos

Some of these shampoos are:

  • Head & Shoulders
  • Nizoral
  • Selsun Blue
  • Dove
  • Neutrogena

Just make sure to take note of the instructions written on the label. The method can vary depending on the ingredients found in the shampoo.

There are those that you leave in for 15 minutes or so. Whereas other need to be washed off immediately.

You can use dandruff shampoo twice every week and alternate with your usual shampoo. But if you are African-American, you can wash with a dandruff shampoo once a week.

Also, check if it contains tar. Tar can discolor light-colored hair (e.g. white, gray, blonde) and make your scalp a bit more sensitive to sunlight. So you might want to walk around with an umbrella or a hat.

What if OTC shampoos do not work?

If you have tried OTC shampoos for over a month and there is still no improvement, visit your dermatologist for a possible medicated scalp treatment.
