Best Treatment Options For Black People With Acne

Acne appears as various types of blemishes, or “pimples,” that break out on the skin. These lesions can range from mild to severely inflamed.

Anyone can get scarring and hyperpigmentation, regardless of their skin color. However, for black people, scarring and hyperpigmentation may be more pronounced.

How do pimples affect black people?

This is a skin condition characterized by inflammatory and non-inflammatory skin lesions. Blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts are all different types of lesions.

There are many causes of acne, including hormones, hygiene, diet, and more.

While pimples affect any skin color, black people are more susceptible to a condition called post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation happens when certain areas of the skin appear darker than others. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation occurs as a side effect of inflammatory skin conditions, such as acne.

Treatment options:

  • Salicylic acid:

Salicylic acid is a popular treatment option because it chemically exfoliates the skin to keep the pores clear. Chemical exfoliation is an important treatment in dark skin because it reduces the chance of acne lesions developing in the first place.

  • Benzoyl peroxide:

Benzoyl peroxide is another common treatment for acne, especially when used in combination with other treatments for inflammatory type. In addition to exfoliating the skin, benzoyl peroxide also kills the bacteria that can contribute to inflammation and hyperpigmentation.

  • Retinol and retinoids:

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that can be used as a treatment option. They improve the overall health of the skin, thus reducing the appearance of scars and blemishes.

Topical retinoids has helped to reduce hyperpigmentation in people with skin of color who have breakout. When combined with other treatment options, retinoids may be more effective at improving post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Breakouts usually make us feel very low but try not to apply these treatment options without consulting your doctor. As these all are chemical products so applying it without knowing the exact consequences may damage your skin in unexpected ways.
